What We Do
Putting children’s needs first.
When parents in conflict choose sides, and allege problems such as domestic violence, substance abuse, mental health issues and other personal failings, the resulting trauma can impact any child's sense of well-being, value and stability. A Superior Court Judge or Commissioner responsible for making a custody decision may not have sufficient information about the allegations or the child’s well being to make a well-informed or reasoned decision. When appointed to these cases, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) gather information, provide an impartial evaluation of the issues impacting the children, and make recommendations to the judge or commissioner that would enable a safer, more nurturing environment.
If a case goes to trial, the CASA may appear in court with the program’s legal counsel to elaborate on findings. Other cases may be resolved in settlement conferences, with the CASA report serving as a useful tool, thus shortening the time that the family is undergoing transition during the legal process.
