Why volunteer for Family Law CASA? "Initially I was planning a major in psychology and didn't know if I would be able to keep myself emotionally detached enough from situations to be a full time counselor -- so I guess you could say as a test." We are looking for volunteers to act as family law CASA's (Court Appointed Special Advocates) in King County. Our program recruits, screens, trains, and supervises the volunteers. The training is 4 full days. Trainings are held three times per year. See Events for the schedule. The CASA's are assigned by us to work on family law cases (divorce, paternity, third party custody and modifications) to investigate and advocate for the child/ren in the family. We work on low and moderate income cases in both Seattle and Kent Superior Court. Cases last 10-12 months at the longest and 3-4 months at the shortest. Average time varies with the type of case but it can run from a total of 10 hours to 70 hours. The volunteers meet and interview the parents, meet and observe parents and child, collect information from collateral references and review legal records. They write up their investigation in a report(s) and may need to appear at hearings or a trial. We supervise them through the entire process and appear with them in court. If you are interested, call or e-mail familylawcasa@speakeasy.net for an application. Thanks. |
