What it takes to be a CASA Volunteer

Putting the needs of a child first.

To be a CASA volunteer, a person must have a strong desire to work on the behalf of children. You need to have sufficient time and have an ability to write. CASAs range in age from 21 to 75, have varied backgrounds and represent diverse nationalities, races and religious beliefs from throughout our community.

Family Law CASA volunteers take their role seriously. They provide the personal connection in the court during disputed custody cases. Volunteers must be able to dedicate the time needed to investigate a case; have access to transportation for making family home visits; and have an ability to write up their investigations. Cases average 6-12 months and often include more than one child per family. A volunteer may spend 40-60 hours working on a case, but the length varies with each case. Training and court appearances are scheduled during the week but much of the investigation can be done during evening or weekend hours.
